Background of Juno

 

-Juno, released in 2007, grossed $143 million in the U.S. and $227 million internationally (Willis 240)
-Juno was Diablo Cody's first screenplay and was directed by Jason Reitman, who also directed Young Adult (2011), another of Cody's screenplays 
-Originally an indie film, it was critically acclaimed and nominated for four Oscars (Willis 240)


-The movie focuses on Juno, played by Ellen Page, a 16-year-old girl who discovers she's pregnant by her friend Paulie Bleeker, played by Michael Cera. Initially deciding on abortion, Juno changes her mind and decides to give the baby away to a wealthy couple in a closed adoption

-The character of Juno has been described as "wry, tough talking, secretly tender," "outspoken and action-oriented," and an "eccentric teen" (qtd. in Valby, Willis 240, Huffman)


-The character of Paulie Bleeker has been described as "sweetly vulnerable" (Valby)
     -Paulie has a feeble nature and is timid sexuality yet he manages to get Juno pregnant after having sex once
